At the front of the building twenty-two flag holders were mounted approximately 40 cm below each letter of the institution 'Gerrit Rietveld Academie'. From a distance, the name of the academy appeared to be underlined by the flag holders. The flag holders remained empty as if waiting for an 'identity' change. If flags were mounted in the holders, the name of the institute would become invisible and its symbolic identity would be changed or replaced.
Whether as the result of corporate sponsorship or the continuous subordination to the set of rules imposed by a government or other public body, an (art) institution loses its (semi-) autonomous status.
